What are Electrophysiology Studies?

An electrophysiology study (EPS) is a minimally invasive test performed by a cardiac electrophysiologist. It is a mapping study, where a series of small tubes called catheters are inserted into the heart to monitor electrical activity. The goal is to precisely locate the source of the electrical problem.

Why Electrophysiology Studies (EPS)are Performed

There are several reasons why an EPS may be performed to determine how electrical signals move through the heart.

An irregular heart rhythm

Typically an unusually fast heartbeat such as supraventricular tachycardia, or SVT.

A sudden loss of consciousness with other risk factors or suspected heart rhythm disorders

Risk of sudden death. In certain heart conditions, an EPS may help determine the risk of sudden heart death

If you require ablation for an abnormal heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation, an EPS is always performed before ablation is completed.

Causes of Electrophysiology Studies (EPS)

The risk of an EPS is low and the procedure is considered to be extremely safe. The risks, however, may include the following

Clinically significant bleeding (<3%)

Infection (<1%)

Stroke (<1%)

Heart valve damage (<1%)

Cardiac tamponade, or bleeding around the heart (<1%)

What will happen during Electrophysiology Studies (EPS)

A cardiac electrophysiologist, or heart rhythm doctor, will perform this minimally invasive procedure inside a specialized procedure room, called a catheterization laboratory. You will have an IV line and receive anesthesia in most cases. During this time, a series of long plastic tubes called catheters will be inserted into the heart. Using X-ray and specialized computer software, electrical signals will be measured to form an electrical map of the heart. For some patients, cardiac ablation will then be performed to restore a normal heart rhythm.

There is very little pain or discomfort. Each study can take 2-4 hours to complete.
