Overview
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for performing nuclear cardiology studies in a fast-paced outpatient cardiovascular practice. This role supports the performance of 2–4 nuclear stress tests per day, 4 days per week, and requires expertise in radiopharmaceutical administration, SPECT/CT imaging, and image processing. The technologist works closely with cardiologists to ensure high-quality diagnostic studies and exceptional patient care.
Nuclear Stress Testing
- Prepare, handle, and administer radiopharmaceuticals (Tc-99m sestamibi, tetrofosmin, or thallium) in compliance with NRC and state regulations
- Perform exercise and pharmacologic (adenosine, regadenoson, dobutamine) stress testing protocols
- Operate SPECT and/or SPECT/CT gamma camera systems to acquire myocardial perfusion images
- Complete 2–4 full stress test studies per day with efficiency and accuracy
- Monitor patients throughout stress and imaging phases, responding promptly to adverse events
Image Processing & Quality Assurance
- Process and reconstruct nuclear images using cardiac software
- Perform quantitative analysis, including polar maps, gated SPECT, and ejection fraction calculations
- Conduct daily and weekly QC procedures on gamma camera equipment
- Ensure all images meet diagnostic quality standards prior to physician interpretation
Radiopharmaceutical Management
- Order, receive, and document radiopharmaceutical doses in compliance with regulatory standards
- Maintain accurate radiation exposure records, dose calibrator logs, and survey records
- Manage radioactive waste disposal per NRC, state, and institutional guidelines
- Ensure compliance with the practice’s Radiation Safety Program and ALARA principles
Patient Care
- Screen patients for contraindications, obtain informed consent, and provide pre/post-procedure education
- Place IV access, monitor vital signs, and perform 12-lead ECG during stress testing
- Communicate effectively with patients of varying health conditions and anxieties
- Coordinate patient scheduling to optimize daily workflow for 2–4 studies
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate procedure logs, dose records, and patient records in the EMR/nuclear medicine system
- Adhere to ACR, ASNC, and SNMMI guidelines for nuclear cardiology
- Participate in accreditation preparation (ACR or IAC) and quality improvement initiatives
- Assist with billing documentation by accurately coding procedures
Qualifications
Required
- ARRT(N) or CNMT certification in good standing
- Current state nuclear medicine technologist license (if applicable)
- NRC Authorized User (AU) or ability to work under AU supervision
- BLS/CPR certification (ACLS preferred)
- Minimum 1 year of nuclear cardiology or nuclear medicine experience
- Proficiency with SPECT or SPECT/CT gamma camera systems
Preferred
- Experience in a cardiology or cardiovascular imaging setting
- Familiarity with cardiac stress testing protocols (exercise and pharmacologic)
- Experience with nuclear cardiology reporting software
- 12-lead ECG interpretation skills
